Come for the walk. Savour the moments in between.

The Comfort of Slack-Packing

One of the joys of the Clarens – Caledon Camino is that it’s a slack-packing experience — meaning you only carry what you need for the day’s walk. All your luggage is thoughtfully transported from one welcoming accommodation to the next, allowing you to travel light and free.

Each evening, you’ll arrive at carefully selected farms and charming guest houses, where comfort and hospitality are at the heart of your stay.

This blend of effortless travel and genuine South African farm hospitality makes this Camino not only a soulful journey but also excellent value for money. It’s a chance to fully immerse yourself in the landscape and community without worrying about heavy bags or logistical hassles — simply walk, rest, and savour every moment.

What to Expect

Each day begins with setting simple intentions (nothing overwhelming, no life decisions required before breakfast) and ends with relaxed reflections on the day’s walk, conversations, and discoveries.

Along the way, you’ll:

  • Walk through some of the Free State’s most beautiful natural landscapes

  • Share stories, laughter, and thoughtful conversations with fellow hikers

  • Capture moments through journaling, or photography

  • Keepsakes, reflections, and contributions from new companions become lasting reminders of the journey, making every Camino experience uniquely personal.

Why the Clarens – Caledon Camino is Different

Yes, the views are spectacular: golden sandstone cliffs, wide horizons, and those “let’s just stand here for a moment” kinds of landscapes. But the real difference lies in the experience itself.

The result is a Camino that feels personal, unforced, and deeply human, allowing each Lady to walk their own path, at their own pace.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival at Oranje Guest Farm

Arrive during the afternoon and take time to settle into your accommodation, explore the farm, and get acquainted with your fellow walkers. For those looking to unwind before the adventure begins, Oranje offers a heated indoor swimming pool, providing the perfect opportunity for a relaxing dip while taking in the peaceful surroundings.

As the sun begins to set over the mountains, we gather for a welcoming dinner and opening circle. This is your chance to meet the group, share your reasons for joining the Camino, and begin forming the friendships that often become one of the most memorable parts of the experience.

Each guest will receive a personal Camino journal to accompany them on the journey. Your guide will introduce the route, explain what lies ahead over the coming days, and help you embrace the spirit of the Camino, one of reflection, connection, adventure, and discovery.

Tonight is about slowing down, settling in, and preparing both body and mind for the incredible journey that awaits tomorrow.
