Nyala Safari Lodge

Nyala Safari Lodge

Nyala Safari Lodge, nestled along the seasonal Mohlabetsi River in the Balule Nature Reserve, offers a truly unique and immersive safari experience. The lodge is housed in a collection of five rondawel-style chalets, each designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding bushveld.

The main lodge features a wrap-around deck that curves with the river’s flow, providing an ideal vantage point for observing wildlife. The shade provided by towering trees like the Boer-bean and Jackalberry trees ensures comfort even during the hottest summer days. Guests can also enjoy the refreshing swimming pool and its accompanying decking area, often visited by bushbuck and vervet monkeys.

A short distance from the main area lies a waterhole where animals frequently come to drink, creating a dynamic show for visitors. The lodge also boasts a boma area where guests can enjoy dinner around a crackling fire under the starry African sky.

The chalets are beautifully furnished with a blend of earthy tones, light wood, and Egyptian cotton linen, providing a luxurious yet rustic feel. Each room offers either views of the bushveld, pool, or river and includes both indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioning, and a choice of a luxurious bath in four of the rooms.

Activities include daily game drives at the crack of dawn and in the late afternoon, allowing for optimal sightings of both day and nocturnal wildlife. Guests can also opt for boma dinners, enhancing the adventurous atmosphere of their stay at Nyala Safari Lodge.

General Information

Location

Nyala Safari Lodge is situated in the renowned Balule Nature Reserve within the Greater Kruger, a Big 5 reserve that shares unfenced borders with Kruger National Park. For self-drivers, it’s approximately a 6-hour drive from Johannesburg. Upon arrival, guests must leave their vehicle at the gate, and Nyala will provide a 40-minute transfer to the lodge. Many safari-goers opt to fly into O.R. Tambo and take a connecting flight to Hoedspruit-Eastgate Airport. Scheduled and private transfers can also be arranged through our reservations team.

Wildlife

The bush is wild, unpredictable, and full of surprises, with each day offering something new. Wildlife is often seen at the waterhole or along the banks of the seasonal river in front of the lodge. Regular visitors include a variety of bird species, giraffe, elephants, impala, and occasional predators. As part of the Big 5 Balule Nature Reserve, the area is also home to a wide range of other animals, such as zebra, warthog, spotted hyena, baboon, hippo, kudu, vervet monkeys, and waterbuck.

Weather

The Kruger is an excellent safari destination year-round, with hot summers and crisp, dry winters. Summer runs from November to April, and winter from May to August. During the rainy summer months, the landscape transforms into lush, emerald green. November and December are prime times for spotting young impala lambs, as they give birth. Summer is also ideal for birdwatching, with a variety of migratory species arriving. Expect full waterholes, rivers, and dramatic rain showers. Winter brings warm temperatures, with cool mornings and evenings and dry, sunny days. The thinning bushveld makes it easier to spot big game, and the scarcity of water draws predators to waterholes, making game tracking more accessible.

Malaria

The Balule Nature Reserve is considered a low-risk malaria area. It’s recommended to consult your local doctor for advice. Typically, medications like Malarone, Doxycycline, or Melfloquine are used for the Kruger region. Mosquitoes are more common during the warmer, wetter season, so using mosquito repellent and creams is an effective way to prevent bites.
