A Step Into The Bush

nThambo Tree Camp

nThambo Tree Camp is an eco-friendly lodge situated in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, and shares unfenced borders with the Timbavati Nature Reserve and Kruger National Park. This intimate Big 5 reserve offers a unique safari experience with only five treehouse chalets, each perched on stilts and offering elevated views of the surrounding bushveld. The chalets, designed for two guests, can be configured with either double or twin beds and feature heavy-duty canvas walls, thatched roofs, and wooden floors. Each chalet boasts a private balcony with stunning views of the savannah, extending all the way to the Drakensberg Mountains on the horizon.

The central lodge area is a comfortable, wooden structure that includes an open-plan dining space, bar, and lounge that seamlessly flows out to a small splash pool. A waterhole located just in front of the camp attracts wildlife, with elephants often seen drinking from it, especially during the dry season.

Guests at nThambo enjoy game drives through the Klaserie Reserve, guided by knowledgeable rangers who offer insights into the local wildlife. The camp’s intimate, elevated treehouses provide a truly immersive experience, where the sounds of elephants feeding and hyenas passing below add to the wild atmosphere. General Information

Location

nThambo Tree Camp is situated in the heart of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, which spans 60,000 hectares on both sides of the Klaserie River. This unfenced reserve shares borders with the Kruger National Park to the east and the Timbavati Nature Reserve to the north. As a part of the Greater Kruger Park, wildlife roams freely across the Klaserie, Timbavati, Manyeleti, Sabi Sands, and Kruger National Park, providing guests with exceptional game viewing opportunities.

Weather

The average annual rainfall in the area is 350mm, with the majority of the precipitation occurring during the mid-summer months from November to February. The rainfall typically comes in the form of thunderstorms, with brief downpours that usually last no longer than a few hours. The average maximum temperatures vary from 24.5°C in July to 31.5°C in January, while the average minimum temperature occurs in July at around 8.5°C.

Wildlife

During the dry season, the sparse vegetation makes it easier to spot wildlife as animals gather around watering holes. In contrast, the wet season brings denser vegetation, causing wildlife to disperse across the area. Whether during a 2-3 night stay or longer, you can expect to see the Big Five. In addition, other regularly sighted animals include giraffe, zebra, warthog, spotted hyena, baboon, hippo, impala, kudu, vervet monkey, waterbuck, wildebeest, bushbaby, mongoose, duiker, and steenbok. Rare sightings may include wild dog, cheetah, honey badger, porcupine, aardvark, civet, caracal, and serval.

Birdwatchers will delight in spotting a variety of species such as vultures, owls, bee-eaters, rollers, eagles, bustards, hornbills, starlings, and shrikes. The reserve offers an excellent chance to observe diverse wildlife and birdlife across both seasons.

Game Drive Vehicles

On game drives, you can get much closer to the big game compared to traditional safaris. The animals are generally habituated to the vehicles, meaning they are accustomed to their presence and recognize that they pose no threat. As a result, you can safely approach these magnificent creatures, getting within just five to ten meters of them. All game drives are conducted in open 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers, ensuring a comfortable and immersive experience.

Malaria

The Klaserie region is considered a low-risk malaria area. However, it’s always advisable to consult your local doctor for personalized advice before traveling. The common anti-malarial medications recommended for the Kruger area include Malarone, Doxycycline, or Melfloquine. To further reduce the risk, it’s also recommended to use mosquito repellent and take additional precautions during your stay.
