Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails offers a truly unique mobile safari experience in South Africa, designed specifically for adventurous travelers and nature enthusiasts seeking an immersive walking safari. Set within an 8,000-hectare reserve of rugged and varied terrain, this 3-day guided walking safari takes place in the heart of the Maseke Game Reserve, part of the iconic Greater Kruger region. The experience is fully serviced, with a mobile camp set up for you at each overnight stop. Guided walks are led by an expert guide and skilled tracking team, ensuring a safe and educational wilderness adventure.

This Big Five walking safari is an extraordinary way to explore the Greater Kruger, offering guests the chance to connect deeply with the natural world. Each evening is spent at a new location within the reserve, with no need to lift a finger when it comes to setting up camp. Accommodation is provided in four dome tents, each sleeping two people comfortably on individual mattresses complete with bed linen, duvets, and pillows. Every tent includes an en-suite bathroom with a bucket shower and chemical toilet for convenience and privacy.

The camp’s main social area features a central fire pit surrounded by safari chairs, an outdoor dining table, and a small bar area. As the camp chefs prepare hearty, wholesome meals, guests are free to unwind around the boma and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the bushveld. Expect breathtaking views over a majestic river, sweeping wilderness landscapes, and the soothing sounds of nature.

The highlight of the experience is the daily walking safari, covering several hours on foot each day and allowing for incredible wildlife encounters and tracking experiences. Evenings conclude with a well-earned sundowner and a night drive to search for nocturnal predators. A reasonable level of fitness is required to fully enjoy the walking trails.

Location

Africa on Foot Wilderness Trails is located in the Maseke Balule Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger, nestled between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa in Limpopo Province. Spanning 8,000 hectares, this private game reserve shares open borders with the renowned Kruger National Park. The reserve is traversed by the Olifants River and is defined by its striking mountainous ridges and boulder-strewn koppies, creating a diverse and captivating landscape that offers a unique experience for exploration on foot.

Weather

The average annual rainfall is 350mm, with the majority falling during the mid-summer months (November to February). Rain typically comes in the form of short but intense thunderstorms, rarely lasting more than a few hours. Average maximum temperatures range from 24°C in July to 31°C in January, while the average minimum temperature occurs in July, averaging 8.5°C.

Wildlife

Mammals: South Africa is home to some of the world’s largest mammals, including elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffalo, and rhinos, all residing in the wild Kruger Park and surrounding private game reserves. Game drives offer unforgettable sightings of these iconic species, alongside general game such as zebras, impalas, kudus, gnus, waterbucks, bushbucks, duikers, and steenboks. Nyala are also frequent visitors to the camp itself.

Predators: Among the herbivores roam the carnivorous creatures of the South African bush. Lions, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, African wild dogs, and Nile crocodiles are some of the prominent predators in the Kruger. Smaller predators such as jackals, mongooses, civets, genets, and honey badgers also inhabit the area.

Birdlife: The Kruger habitat is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with a diverse range of species. Water birds like herons, storks, plovers, spoonbills, and sandpipers frequent the dam edges, while kingfishers, orioles, robins, chats, larks, cisticolas, and coucals are common in the veld and woodlands. Birds of prey can be spotted and heard throughout the day, adding to the rich avian diversity.

Malaria

Before traveling, guests are advised to consult their local doctors regarding anti-malarial medication and preparation. Additionally, using a repellent stick or spray is highly effective and recommended for further protection.
