What is an Explorer Camp? In the bygone days of early African exploration, Explorer Camps had four important attributes; Safety, Portability, Practicality, and Comfort. In that order!
These were groups of people who travelled relatively fast by oxen wagon. However, they covered vast distances over months if not years, so good hearty food, and a good bed with hot water were mandatory. Throw in a few cold beers, some good wine, a pool to cool off in and Bundox Tented Safari Camp is as close as you will get to meeting Livingstone.
A safari is all about experiences… Waking before sunrise as the dawn chorus begins and the distant call of a lone hyena breaks the grasp of the night; the steam rising from your first cup of coffee in the early morning chill as daylight breaks on the eastern horizon; the smell of dew in the air as you head out on your morning Game Drive.

It’s watching elephants bathing in the searing heat of the afternoon; raising a glass to the sunset and the end of another African day; sitting around a roaring fire exchanging stories as darkness takes hold; sharing a wonderful meal with newfound friends; a soothing hot bucket shower before climbing between fresh cotton sheets and falling asleep to the sounds of lions roaring in the distance.
These are the unforgettable memories you take home with you that make you want to return, again and again. That’s a great safari. That’s what a Balule Game Drive Safari at the Bundox Explorer Camp is all about.
This is a unique breakaway for those looking for a combination of pristine Bush, and good game sightings during your two daily Game Drives, all in Big 5 territory. Unwind and relax in nature, with plenty of fresh air, serenity and laughter, quenching the thirst of those seeking an authentic Safari adventure.
Simplicity under canvas
There are no hard and fast rules that define luxury when it comes to safari experiences. At Explorer Camp luxury comes in the form of uncomplicated, effortless surroundings that make you feel part of wild Africa rather than separated from it. Explorer Camp is a lesson in simplicity without giving up comforts and its four double tents take their inspiration from a bygone era when less was definitely more.
Each has twin beds with sprung bases and comfortable divan-style mattresses, dressed in cool cotton sheets and lightweight duvets. Additional blankets are kept in a wooden kist for the cooler months and crisp winter nights. The camp is off-grid with a solar system that provides power in each tent, enabling you to recharge your devices and camera batteries as needed. A fan provides the perfect cooling breeze whenever you need it.
The en-suite bathrooms include a flushing toilet, a single vanity unit with a basin and a shower with running cold water. Hot water is available anytime on demand and is run through a bucket shower system that’s both effective and wonderfully sustainable.
Mosquito flaps allow the tents to remain secure but airy, providing good ventilation in the warmer months. There is insect repellant and bug spray in each room, as well as packing and hanging space for clothing. Outside there is a small deck with comfortable chairs and views of the camp.
The result is the perfect combination of comfort, practicality, clean design and functionality that’s also easy on the eye. What more could you wish for?
A professional Game Ranger will lead an informative, thrilling, and unforgettable drive in the bush.
