Horse riding along the beaches of the Wild Coast offers some of the most perfect and spectacular horse riding countryside found anywhere in the world.
Rolling hills, deep gorges, and cliff tops that plunge into the ocean ensure that this is not just a beach ride; it’s an adventure! The beach canters are exhilarating, the environment pristine, and the views stunning.
TACK & EQUIPMENT
We use South African hand-made Liversage saddles. Leon Liversage & his son have been making Trail-Riding and Endurance saddles since the early ’90s. The view has always been that saddles should be designed for the comfort of both horse and rider alike. We require all clients to wear a riding hat. We only ride traditional English style.
We definitely encourage you to bring your own well-fitted helmet! There is a weight limit of 95kg.
ACCOMMODATION
Our accommodation is a picture-perfect self-contained 8-bedroom, seafront holiday home and is beautifully styled for comfort and relaxation.
Spend your free time on the spacious front patio and watch the waves crashing onto the beach, literally meters away. Dolphins and whales are often spotted frolicking in the waves while you lounge with a cocktail in hand after a good day’s riding!
The bedrooms all have their own bathroom, with most being on- suite. There is a combination of sea- facing and non-sea facing rooms which will be allocated at the time of booking on a first to book basis.
Sharing options are available and offered with double, king, and queen size beds.
Your getaway is hosted by Nita with catered meals at the guest house and local restaurants.
RIDING ABILITY
The Beach Escape Riding Getaway is ideal for most riding levels. Our team of professional horse trail guides, and much-loved horses will take you on a journey, exploring the local area of Kei Mouth, Morgan Bay and across the river with the horses on the pontoon to canter the beaches of the Wild Coast.
This Wild-Coast Adventure is suitable for all riders with some experience:
NOVICE RIDER = someone who is comfortable in the saddle & enjoys a reliable well-schooled horse. They generally ride at a riding school once or twice a month or like to ride a friend’s horse on the farm. They can trot comfortably and enjoy a nice controlled canter.
INTERMEDIATE RIDER = someone who rides regularly and enjoys a forward going well-schooled horse. They may or may not be a little nervous for the first little bit while they get to know their horse. They can control their horse independently and are confident trotting and in controlled canters.
ADVANCED RIDER = someone who is comfortable on most horses in most situations. They ride regularly and may or may not have their own horse. They have a good seat and gentle hands. They can ride in a light seat and can hold a strong horse in a fast canter
ITINERARY
Day 1 (Monday or Wednesday)
• 12h30 Check-In – we look forward to welcoming you 12h30, with time to settle in and unpack before a light lunch served at 13h30
• 14h30 – Please be dressed to ride and meet your horse-riding guides. They will go through the safety briefing, chat to you about the riding and answer any questions that you may have.
• 15h00 We will take you up to the horse yard for your afternoon ride. This is a short drive from the accommodation.
• The afternoon ride is a relaxed out-ride to assess your riding and to match you to the rights horses that you will ride over the next few days.
• Return to the yard to welcoming sundowners before heading back to the guest house.
• Dinner and overnight at the beach front guest house.
Day 2 (Tuesday or Thursday)
• 8h30 Breakfast is served, and you get to sip your morning tea or coffee while wiggling your toes in the sand, or just taking in the great view!
• 10h00 Be ready and dressed to ride and go to the horses.
• Today’s ride is a relaxed day of exploring the village and surrounding area of Morgan Bay. With its mile long beach, cliffs that plunge into the ocean, and a selection of seaside restaurants to have lunch at, the riding is varied and the views stunning. It is the perfect first day!
• Overnight and a relaxed dinner at the guest house.
Day 3 (Wednesday or Friday)
• Enjoy a laid-back breakfast, and watch the sunrise over the ocean.
• This is a lovely free morning to explore the village and discover the beaches and walks that are on your doorstep.
• An optional ride is available and we will take you up to the horses at 9.30am – the riding will be tailored to your preference, and you will be out for about 2 hours before dropping you off at the guest house around lunch time.
• 15h00 Enjoy a sundowner cruise on the Kei River. The Fish Eagle Cruise is a must do experience when visiting Kei Mouth. The barge takes you on a slow meander up the river. Bring your binoculars for bird watching and a camera to capture the Great Fish Eagle, swooping in for fishy treats. It is also a perfect opportunity to pop open a bottle of bubbly, and just relax into the splendour of this mighty river, beautiful nature and celebrate life with your newfound friends. Please note this is weather and tide dependant.
• Dinner this evening will be at one of the local restaurants. Overnight at the guest house.
Day 5 (Friday or Sunday)
• Breakfast at your convenience
• Enjoy your last optional ride depending on departure time.
• Departure and transfer back to the airport.
Day 4 (Thursday or Saturday)
• 8h00 Another lazy breakfast, and glorious sunrise over the sea, but be dressed and ready to ride at 9h00 – today we take you along the edge of Africa!
• We saddle up and head to the Greak Kei River and cross on the ferry with the horses. The ride is dictated by the tide, either inland if the tide is high or along the beach at low tide. This is a taste of what adventure riding is, with a good mix of beach and wondering the many tracks and trails that meander through the villages and open countryside. Pack your swim suite to cool off in the pool at lunch time, and enjoy a great pub lunch before heading back to the Kei.
• On returning to the horse yard, Nita will be there to welcome you with sundowners and snacks, a perfect end to a great day of riding.
• Dinner and overnight at the guest house.
